18th Annual

Southeastern Council Conclave

&

Fly Fishing Show

May 29 - 31

Dozens of fly-tiers assemble in the Grand Ballroom whirling and spinning, not on the dance floor (thankfully) but rather with their hands, fur and feathers round the hooks clamped in their vices. Pull up a chair, watch these guys work their magic. Ask questions, learn a new technique, and share some fishing stories.

Max Birnkammer, Smyrna, GA - Max started tying flies five years ago. He ties mostly warm water flies, which he uses to catch largemouth, spotted and shoal bass in the rivers and lakes close to home in Smyrna. He has tied at fly fishing shows and has led seminars at local fly shops. His favorite bass flies are hand painted poppers and streamers. He builds his own fly rods and can often be seen fishing from one of his vintage wooden boats. Every summer he travels to Maine to fly fish for northern smallmouth bass, which he believes is the ultimate trophy in warm water fly fishing.

In addition to being known for his inventive fly tying techniques, Knack’s mechanical inventions are often conversation pieces. His “Natural Light Simulator,” that demonstrates how changing light actually produces color changes in nymphs, has been received with great interest and enthusiasm.

He began flyfishing as a young teen in the early 1980s fishing warm water rivers and ponds near his home and began tying flies shortly thereafter. While attending Young Harris College in northeast Georgia, Steve discovered fishing for trout on the fly and spent many hours chasing trout while at Young Harris and in the years following. In recent years he has rediscovered his love of catching bream and bass on the fly. As a result, Steve currently specializes in tying foam-bodied bugs for bream and bass.

Upon the first publication of his first fly, John McClain of FeathersMC.com noted “Matt, like many of the new faces appearing here, are in my opinion the "future of Salmon Fly Tying. Aaron McDaniel - Alexandria, KY. Aaron started tying flies when he was ten years old. At thirteen he and his dad Bill joined Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers club after attending their annual Beginner's Fly Tying five-week course at Northern Kentucky University one winter. Since then, Aaron has matured as both a fly-tyer and a fly-fisher and has grown into a first rate teacher of his skills. Now 19, Aaron heads up NKFF's monthly Fly Tying Frenzy (a very laid-back evening of fly-tying for all levels) and has this year taken over the head-master position at the Beginner's Fly Tying Class which is still held at NKU each winter. Aaron starred in the Fly Tying Show on NKFF's cable television series Fishing On The Fly an award-winning public cable show produced by other Northern Kentucky Fly Fisher members. Not to be put off by the inaccessibility of certain fly tying materials, Aaron has become a master of alternative materials and loves to roam the craft stores for new things to use in plying his art. He really loves craft foam (being a down-home bass and bluegill fisher at his core) and creates some great flies that the warm-water species really love.

Mark Romero, Lakeview, AK & Roscoe, NY -

G.S. “Stack” Scoville – Nashville, TN – Stack’s tying education started with books and limited material and tools. Trout flies, wets, dries, nymphs, and streamers eventually gave way to spinning deer hair and bass bugs. The inspiration of books like Poul Jorgensen’s book on tying salmon flies and The Atlantic Salmon Fly, The Tyers and Their Art by Judith Dunham led to lots of research, which led to his chapter contribution in Mike Radencich’s "Tying the Classic Salmon Fly." Stack has taken tying lessons from masters such as Ron Alcott, Mike Radencich, Bob Veverka, Mark Waslick, Bill Hunter, and Charlie Chute. Because of their generosity and guidance, Stack has been able to improve his skills and develop his own style, especially for artistic flies. Stack’s flies have appeared in Fly Tyer Magazine, and books by Poul Jorgensen, Bob Veverka, John Shewey, and David Klausmeyer. In 2004, he won a silver medal for an artistic salmon fly, “The Fields of the Shannon”, and a silver medal for a saltwater baitfish, “The Angel Baitfish”, in the Irish Open Fly Tying Championship.
