On-Stream Tactics (Gary Borger - ON STREAM) - Learn from the best of the best. This seminar will be held on a nearby stream (Nacoochee Bend).  Limit 12 - $50.

A Lifetime Pursuit of Passion: Sixty Years of Fishing in the GSMNP (Jim Casada) - This program comes straight out of Jim's new  book and reflects, in an intensely personal way, with lots of anecdotes about people and places, my love of the Park and its streams To read a super review of Jim's new book ... Click HERE.
Jim Casada Book

Red Tails in the Marsh Grass (David Lambert) -
Learn to fish this truly unique wade fishing challenge -- tailing redfish in North Florida and South Georgia's spartina grass flats. Learn the best times of year, how to wade, and where to find fish. Equally important: Learn what to avoid, like the unproductive, even dangerous black mud marshes, deeper waters, and oyster bars. You'll learn effective flies you can tie yourself, and the
simple fly-fishing equipment needed to find, approach, and catch these sometimes reluctant, occasionally difficult fish. The real secret is that these flats offer also sheepshead and black drum. Unlocking the Secrets of Southern Tailwaters (Chirs Scalley) - Join Chris Scalley in an in-depth profile of the Chattahoochee and Cumberland tailwater sport-fisheries. Preserving and protecting these unique rivers as a steward and guide for 20 years. Learn about ecology, aquatic life and grassroots outreach. How to target trophy trout and match the hatch. How to plan a safe and productive fly fishing excursion on these rivers. Power point with hand outs of maps and hatch charts.

Fly Fishing Argentina - will focus on the western section of the country which butts up against the Chilean border and the Andes Mountains. This is an area where the fishing is like going back in time and fishing the great streams of the Rockies 40 or 50 years ago. It offers fantastic dry fly action and the wildest streamer fishing he's ever experienced personally. Overnight float trips feature traditional Argentine cuisine and famous wines. All this is on rivers where you may see only a handful of other anglers, if any, in two days of floating and fishing. It's a trip everyone should try to make at some time in their lives.

Our Favorite Trout Waters: Hiwassee River & Others (Dane Law) - takes anglers on a tour of five of our favorite rivers. It begins at the southern tip of the Appalachians and goes north to the Cumberland plateau. Describing what we like best about each stream. As far as a bio goes, look at the guides page on our website www.southeasternanglers.com and see if that works. You might also add that I am graduate of the university of Georgia and a licensed realtor in north Georgia mountains and east Tennessee. Just let me know if you need any more info.

Carp With The Redfich Connection (Capt Paul Rose) - This program describes  Flats Style Stalking, Casting and Site Fishing Techniques for a truly great gamefish. This audio-visual program describes his successful techniques and flies for catching carp on the long rod. Paul will even give an explanation of carp behaviours which determines which fish can be caught on a fly and which ones you should just leave for another day. Get ready to see your fly line backing when you hook one of these beast. See picture below; nuff sed?

Capt Paul Rose 2

The Many Arts & Sciences of Fly Fishing (Gary Borger) -
The many arts and sciences of fly fishing integrated into one cohesive strategy for consistent angling success; the tricks for finding and taking big trout.

Fly Fishing For Muskie  (Mike Arnold) -

Come learn a little about the tackle, gear and flies used to catch ESOX MASQUINONGY, AKA the "water wolf", AKA muskellunge or "muskie" for short. At least those that inhabit the lakes and rivers in Kentucky. Mike Arnold has been fishing for these toothy critters since 1991 while bass fishing at Cave Run Lake in central Kentucky and a small one decided Mike's bass fly was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ever since, he's been making at least one or two trips a year to his favorite waters and so far has accumulated about fifteen 'legal' muskies (32" in KY) and twenty-some less than legal. So far, he hasn't cracked the 20-pounder goal he set for himself years ago and he attributes his lack of success to not being able to cast planer boards and cannon-ball down-riggers with his 9-weight outfit.

An Introduction to Saltwater Flyfishing (Steve Hudson) - Have you ever wanted to test the waters of saltwater fly fishing? This program will show you how! Aimed at the regular angler who's thought about saltwater fly fishing but who doesn't quite know where to begin, this lively and entertaining program will demystify the transition from fresh to salt. Along the way participants will learn exactly what they need to know to take on the salt on their own. What kind of equipment is required? What flies do I need? How do I do it on a budget? Can I experience it without buying a flats boat or flying halfway across the world? And, of course will I get eaten by a shark? Those and other questions will be the focus of this session, and when you leave you'll be set with everything you know to enjoy the exciting world of saltwater fly fishing on your own!

                                 OTHER TOPIC PROGRAMS

Drift Boat Building - The Ultimate Woodworking Project - Allan Dozier - how to turn a few sheets of plywood and a few boards into a driftboat using the "stitch and glue" method.  You end up with a wooden boat but the wood is encased in fiberglass for durability and low maintenance.

Furled Leaders - A Twisted Way of Rolling Your Own - Ross Schweinforth - Maybe you tie some of your own flies. Maybe even build a rod or two. Building your own furled leaders is one more piece to put in your repertoire of "I made it myself!". Add all that to the fact that furled leaders are renowned for exceptional turnover and multi-year durability, and you have a real winner! Furled leaders are inexpensive to build, start up cost for materials are very reasonable, and the techniques can be learned rather quickly especially when watching the process with a concurrent explanation, rather than merely trying to interpret a manuscript. In this presentation you will learn what is needed to build a furled leader and the basics of furling a six foot tapered leader from a single 90-foot length of mono, to which only a 3-4 foot length of tippet needs to be added before you go fishing.

Eric began learning fly casting at the early age of nine purely through trial and error. He earned a degree in engineering which enables him to blend the technical background with the artistry of fly casting. Being the eternal student, Eric continues to explore new concepts and techniques.

Rex Gudgel  Rex Gudgel

is an FFF Master Certified Casting Instructor. Rex came to us from California with a stop over in Florida to build Hells Bay Flats Boats with Hal Chittum and Flip Pallot. With fifty years of fly fishing under his wading belt and over twenty five years of guiding and teaching, he brings a vast knowledge of casting and fishing techniques to the table ! Starting his casting "recovery" at the Long beach casting club with Michael Maloney led him to realize he could catch fish ,but did not really cast all that well (sound familiar ?) . The process began to remove all the bad habits acquired through the years and to gain an understanding of why and how waving a long bendable stick in the air, flinging a plastic string actually works !  With Friends and mentors like Lefty Kreh, Flip Pallot and David Diaz the process was fun and very rewarding. Lefty says that" Rex can cast a fly line through a screen door and he can help any body (beginner or advanced) become a better caster with his teaching skills ! Jimmy Harris  Jimmy Haris

has been flyfishing for about 3 decades now and has fished in some great places around the western hemisphere - from Costa Rica to Argentina, the Bahamas and north to Arkansas, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. But his favorite streams are in the southern Appalachian Mountains where he can explore these small environs twelve months of the year. He has been a partner in Unicoi Outfitters since 1998 and is proud of the fact that they are the premier fly shop and guide service in north Georgia. They now have two shops; one in Helen and one in Blue Ridge and have a guide staff in excess of 20 experienced anglers, 5 of which are Certified FFF Casting Instructors. Jimmy has been involved with cold water conservation and education since the early 70's and is a Life Member of Trout Unlimited. His program on "Fly Fishing in Argentina" will focus on the western section of that country which butts up against the Chilean border and the Andes Mountains. An area where the fishing is like going back in time and fishing the great streams of the Rockies 40 or 50 years ago. It offers fantastic dry fly action and the wildest streamer fishing Jimmy has ever experienced personally. Overnight float trips are complete with traditional Argentine cuisine and famous wines. All on rivers where you may see only a handful of other anglers, if any, in two days of floating and fishing. Those are trips everyone should try to plan to make at some time in their lives.

Capt. Paul Rose  Capt Paul Rose 1

is a licensed fishing guide and USCG Captain, Paul is a proud, active member of both CCA and FFF. Flyfishing for more than 25 years, his experience started in western PA fishing rivers and streams for trout and bass. As a Pittsburgh native it is OK to associate him with Steeler  football, Mario Lemieux and a Permanti's sandwich. After his anesthesia training (pays the bills, refer to children below), he relocated to Austin, TX and became a longhorn fan and a saltwater junkie on the famed Texas coast. Starting out with a tunnel jon-boat with the highest platform you ever saw, he learned to saltwater fly-fish. The passion still burns bright as ever, but his boat has been upgraded a bit to Hells Bay Waterman.  Three children later (all girls and all can flyfish), Paul moved back east to Charlotte, NC to be closer to family and friends. Four years ago he decided to combine all of his experiences with some new ones from the Carolinas to create a quality guide service. This service is dedicated to teaching and to customer service. That's a guarantee along with hard fishing and hard guiding. In fact he never wears a watch on the water. When you're satisfied with the trip, you can go home. While the service offers a variety of trips, Paul is a warm water specialist particularly enjoying carp and bass on the fly, not to mention trout and redfish. Check things out send some feedback, ask for info or send a tip.

Chris Scalley  chrisscalley

grew up in Roswell,Georgia, doing the things he loves: hunting, fishing and trapping the Chattahoochee River and surrounding watersheds. Comparing and contrasting other fisheries throughout the world, Chris has fly fished New Zealand's famed freestone waters of the South Island, Ireland's productive loch angling, the Gmundner Traun tailwater of Austria, the Rocky Mountain Western U.S. to more domestic waters like the limestone rich spring creeks of the State of Pennsylvania. Although these distant waters are well worth the journey, Chris and many of his clients have always felt the 'Hooch compares favorably with these "destination rivers" both from an angling and an aethsetic perpective.Field and Stream Magazine recognized Chris as a finalist in the Heroes of Conservation 2007 Awards Gala for efforts to protect the Chattahoochee sport fishery.  He has guided drift boat trips under a National Park Service permit in the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area since 1994 and has maintained a commercial guide's license under the Kentucky's Department of Fish and Wildlife since 2000 leading Cumberland River tailwater float trip adventures. Chris has a BA in History degree from Elon College, North Carolina; and, maintains CPR certification.  Whether you are a beginner, novice or expert, Chris wants to help you rejuvinate your soul on the water!

Ross Schweinforth  Ross Schweinforth 2

got his start in flyfishing at the ripe age of 12 with a telescoping steel fly rod in the foothills of the New York Adirondacks.  After a four-year enlistment in the Marine Corps and a tour of duty in Vietnam he settled in Tennessee with his young bride, and the two have remained together in the southeast.  His 32-year career has ranged through fisheries biology, aquatic toxicology, and environmental engineering.  Retirement has arrived and rings true with travel, more fishing, and contractor/consultant opportunities.  Ross has tied flies and built rods for a number of years, as well as building knotted leaders and making most of his own extra gadget stuff, like line winders, net grabbers, etc.  About five years ago furled leaders caught his attention and he attempted to wade thru the literature in search of an understandable method of furling tapered leaders.  Even with his Ph.D. in hand he became frustrated with the difficulty of interpreting the written methodology.  With that challenge behind him and several hundred leaders later, Ross wants to pass on the process of furling with clear step-by-step instruction that will bring a gleam in your eye that shouts YES!!  I can make it myself!

Mike Arnold  Mike Arnold 2

Mike Arnold started flyfishing in 1980 after running into some folks from a local flyfishing club at a Boat and Sportsman's Show in Cincinnati. It didn't take long for him to completely hooked (in a tree of course) and to fall (face-first into 6-inches of water) completely in love with the sport. Back then Mike's job in the data processing industry (now known as IT) kept him very, very busy for long periods and then virtually without work (although still employed) for several months at a time. This allowed him to attend many flyfishing seminars and schools and extended flyfishing trips. In 1987 Mike lead a handful of rogue northern Kentucky and southeast Indiana fly-fishers away from the local Cincinnati club to form Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers which quickly grew in size to equal the other club. Both clubs still flourish today. Imagine that, two of the most successful flyfishing clubs in the US within miles of each other, with the closest trout stream several hours away and not a mountain within sight. NKFF was hell-bent on warm- and salt-water flyfishing and used that venue to lure many local "trouters" into their group. Retired after 38 years in EDP/IT/telecommunications in 2002, Mike now spends most of his non-fishing time helping to raise their adopted daughter who currently is seven (going on thirty), a 2nd grader (6th grade reading and 5th grade math) who loves fishing, gymnastics, piano and ice-skating as well as most computer games. Both his wife and he work at their daughter's school and have been honored within the overall school district for their volunteerism. Mike still gets to fish twenty or thirty days a year - but also still thinks that is not enough time spent on the water.
