Here's what some of the attendees at the Southeastern Council and The 20th Annual Fly Fishing Show & Conclave
had to say about the event:
From Lindsay Long of the Casting For Recovery (Eastern TN)
What a fantastic event!!!!! It is truly wonderful to be able to meet so many people in one venue that all want to share their passion of fly fishing. Whether it is tying flies, casting styles, painting, or just being on the water, each person has found joy in fishing and wants nothing more than to touch someone else in some way, helping them to know the peace that comes from being out in nature - hearing the music of the water, watching the dance of the line as rolls out its fly, the swish of the net as it lands the fish, and then the stillness broken by a "Fish On", and then the silence again as the fisher begins anew. Casting for Recovery programs throughout the Southeast, especially the East Tennessee Program, are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend the 2010 SE FFF Conclave in Helen, Georgia. We were able to talk with many women, husbands, family members, and people just wanting to ensure that breast cancer survivors are able to enjoy the spiritual, physical, and mental healing of fly fishing. "To fish is to hope", the Casting for Recovery motto, was evident in every aspect of the Conclave. That portion of the mission statement of the FFF, "Cherish the spirit of fellowship among anglers everywhere", embodied throughout the event, thru each presenters voice, thru each wrap of the fly tiers, thru the art of the artists, and especially thru the board members and volunteers is what made the event such a success.
Two volunteers share their thoughts below about their experience:
The FFF conclave was a lesson in camaraderie. Everyone, whatever their field of expertise, was eager to share their knowledge of fly fishing...the authors, the fly fishing instructors, the fly tying experts, the fly rod designers and many other people with interest in the field of fly fishing. Lectures were very informative. Scheduling by the conclave committee allowed attendees the opportunity to attend various lectures.
The facilties at Unicoi seemed to meet all the conclaves' needs to insure a successful FFF gathering. Annabelle The Conclave gave me an opportunity to learn more about casting, reading the water and fishing in the southeast. I thoroughly enjoyed the women's only casting clinic, and I was able to share with that group the impact that CFR had on my life, and how CFR brought me the gift of fly fishing in addition to the wellness support I needed during my recovery. I met CFR volunteers, past retreat participants and reunited with a dear CFR friend from my retreat. When we were not busy being "booth babes" we laughed until we cried and then laughed some more! I also liked getting to know the women fly fishers from Georgia and hope to stay in contact with some of them. It was my first exposure to those that I have since dubbed the "flyfishing rock stars" - Jim Casada, Gary Borger, etc. and it was wonderful to hear their fishing stories and recommendations. The bible study that Gary Borger led on Sunday morning was particularly meaningful to me, and left me feeling spiritually renewed. Stacie
