Georgia Women Flyfishers Hosts Casting For Confidence

On October 9, 2010, Georgia Women Flyfishers hosted their annual Casting For Confidence event for 20 area breast cancer survivors. GWFF started this event several years ago after learning of the health and emotional benefits this sport may provide to patients who undergo surgery that potentially affects arm movement and flexibility. Many survivors also undergo other treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. These medical procedures often leave patients with side effects such as lymphedema, low energy, and depression, among others.
While there are other fly fishing events hosted especially for breast cancer survivors that include discussions and focus groups on the mental, physical and emotional impacts of breast cancer, CFC is designed solely to focus for a day not dealing with an illness, but learning the basics of fly fishing from experienced volunteers and instructors. We want them to have a fun day and possibly continue to learn the sport through local fly fishing clubs. Our volunteers and fishing guides take special care with the participants. We know we must provide a safe environment for folks who have gone through aggressive therapy.
We held CFC in 2010 at Frog Hollow, a privately owned fishing location and residence north of Dahlonega, Georgia. It was a cold but beautiful day. And we all know trout do not hang around in ugly places!! The agenda for the day included learning about fish food (aka bugs), equipment and knots, casting, and fly tying. Then we equipped each participant with waders and boots and take them fishing for part of the afternoon. It was a busy day, but was full of laughter and smiles around! GWFF provides all funding for this event, and we look forward to holding it every year.
The day included a light breakfast, a full lunch and snacks and drinks throughout the day. After fishing was over, the group reconvened for a graduation and awards ceremony. We held a raffle giving each participant the chance to select from several gifts, including silk scarves, jewelry, and a TFO rod and reel. Needless to say, each survivor selected the rod and reel! So far, out of 20 participants, we have had two ladies join GWFF and we are so excited to have them to join us fishing!
We advertize this event through Georgia hospitals, cancer organizations and various support groups. This year we had over 40 people apply to participate, and hope the ones who could not attend will be able to attend next year!
